Mesothelioma Life Expectancy: Scientists in Italy recently published a study on the effects of asbestos exposure on employees at an asbestos cement plant in the southern Italian city of Naples and the results were quite startling. The scientists focused on 1,247 laborers in the factory. They found a significant increase in deaths associated with respiratory diseases among the workers compared to the general population. The study looked at people who worked at the facility between 1950 and 1986, when asbestos use began to lose favor in Italy. It was eventually banned there in 1992.

The workers were tracked through 2005, and the study found that 240 subjects died as a result of respiratory diseases including pneumoconiosis, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer from asbestos. The authors of the study concluded that this was similar to other studies performed elsewhere in the world.

The results are an alarming reminder of how dangerous asbestos is to those who are exposed to its cancer-causing fibers. Nearly 20 percent of subjects died because of the exposure and this number could rise as more victims die over the coming years. Sometimes it can take 10-50 years for mesothelioma symptoms to fully develop.

Asbestos Lawsuit: According to the Lorain Chronicle-Telegram, Lorne J. Elbert Jr. and his company – Elbert Building Co. Inc. – were indicted on EPA charges of illegally removing asbestos from the city’s former Builders Square building that the company owns.

After contacting a licensed asbestos abatement company in June 2007 to inquire on pricing for the removal of 800 square feet of asbestos insulation from the building’s boiler room before it was demolished, Elbert Building Co. received a $4,900 quote for the work to be performed, according to the indictment. While Elbert informed the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency that it would be using a licensed asbestos contractor for the project, it instead paid an unlicensed individual $35 to do the work one month later.

Mesothelioma Information: During an inspection by the Ohio EPA that followed the work, inspectors found four drums that contained dry asbestos products, while asbestos particles were also found left behind on the boiler room and in the parking lot, according to the indictment.

Asbestos: According to the BBC, Flora Stevenson Primary School in Edinburgh was evacuated and closed for the week after work being done to the school building disturbed asbestos after a worker drilled through a board in the school’s cloakroom.

According to the York Press, Arnie “Tivvy” Gomersall worked as a coachbuilder in York factories for years, continually exposing himself to asbestos in the process. Following Gomersall’s recent passing due to mesothelioma, Paul Cooper – a carriageworks trade union official – said that he was the 141st carriageworks employee to pass away from an asbestos related disease.

While that number may seem high, Cooper warned that the true number of deaths attributed to asbestos exposure was likely much higher, as that figure only showed the number of people who had died from mesothelioma and been investigated by inquests in York.

“[The number] excludes people whose mesothelioma may not have been picked up by doctors, which does happen sometimes,” Cooper said. “There will also be others who moved away from York years ago, or who died while being treated in hospitals elsewhere.”

Malignant Mesothelioma: According to the Reading Post, 82-year-old Ronald Kennedy used to work 56-hour weeks in factories that contained many asbestos products that he was required to use regularly.

“I can’t recall where the asbestos lagging on board the ships came from, but I can recall that moving of the asbestos would be performed,” said a statement made by Kennedy regarding his working conditions. “I’d then have to apply it to various pipes – mix asbestos powder with water and apply it as a paste.”

In March 2010 Kennedy was admitted to the hospital to undergo x-rays on his chest that revealed “a considerable amount of fluid” had built up. He was diagnosed with epithelioid mesothelioma in May, 2010, and died from the asbestos disease in December 2011.

Pericardial Mesothelioma: In the inquest that followed Kennedy’s death, Deputy Coroner Ravi Sidhu confirmed that it “was that asbestos [in the factories] that caused the mesothelioma that caused [Kennedy’s] death. He added that the official cause of death had been listed as “the industrial disease of malignant mesothelioma.”
